When you’re online, it’s important to be aware of Internet safety. Here are five tips to help you stay safe and protect your computer when online:

1. Update your software regularly

Software updates often include security patches that help protect your computer from new threats. New software updates occur when manufacturers discover new bugs, improve programs, or address compatibility issues. Make sure to install these updates as soon as they’re available because updating your software ensures that you have the most up-to-date and bug-free version.

2. Use a strong password

Make sure your password is difficult for others to guess by using a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use personal information in your password and never share your password with anyone. Always create a unique password for each site you visit instead of using the same password for multiple websites.

3. Be wary of Internet scams and phishing

Phishing occurs when scammers attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers by masquerading as a trustworthy entity such as a bank or an online retailer. Be very cautious of any emails, websites, or phone calls that request personal information. Internet scams can take many different forms, so it’s important to be vigilant when browsing the Internet and only provide your personal information if you are able to recognize the website as being legitimate.

4. Think before clicking on links or attachments

Links and attachments in emails can contain viruses or other malicious software that could harm your computer. Be careful when opening these types of files, especially if you don’t know the sender! It’s best to delete any suspicious emails without opening them and to never click on links or attachments from unknown sources. If you still are unsure about the legitimacy, it’s always a good idea to scan any files you download with an antivirus program before opening them.

5. Use a secure Internet connection

If possible, always use Wi-Fi from trusted networks rather than public Internet connections. Public Internet connections can be dangerous because they’re not password protected. Secure Internet connections are only available to authorized users, so they’re less likely to be hacked or compromised by malicious software.
